Best Things to Do in Leavenworth, Washington: Hiking, Camping, and More

The small German town in Leavenworth Washington.

Leavenworth wasn’t originally on my list of places to visit during my trip to Alaska, but a spontaneous detour led me to this German-inspired town in the Cascade Mountains—and it was worth every moment. Whether you're into outdoor adventure or just want to soak in the alpine vibes, Leavenworth quickly became one of the most memorable stops of my journey. If you ever find yourself on the road and looking for a place that blends hiking, camping, and great desserts, I highly recommend making a stop here.

Hiking in Leavenworth: Trails with Unforgettable Views

Leavenworth is surrounded by some of the best hiking trails in the Cascades, and exploring them was an absolute highlight:

  • Colchuck Lake Trail: A bit more challenging, but Colchuck Lake is a must if you’re up for an 8-mile round trip hike. The payoff is absolutely breathtaking—the pristine turquoise lake set against the rugged mountains feels like something out of a dream. If you’re into cold plunging, this lake is perfect for an energizing dip that will leave you feeling refreshed.

  • Enchantment Lakes: While I didn’t have time to hike the Enchantments, this multi-day adventure is high on my list for a return visit. If you’ve got the time and the stamina, it’s a must. Just make sure to secure a permit well in advance!

  • Icicle Ridge Trail: This 4.8-mile round-trip hike offers stunning panoramic views of Leavenworth and the Wenatchee River Valley. It’s a steady climb, but the views at the top are more than worth it.

Staying in Leavenworth: Sleeping Under the Stars or in comfort

Staying in Leavenworth added to the adventure of my detour. There's nothing like waking up to the crisp mountain air.

  • The Evergreen Inn: For those who prefer comfort after a day outdoors, The Evergreen Inn is a great choice. I stayed here and loved the apartment-style rooms, offering plenty of space and a homey feel. Located near downtown Leavenworth, it’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the town’s Bavarian charm.

  • Eightmile Campground: Set along Icicle Creek, this peaceful spot offers the perfect blend of nature and convenience, with towering pines and easy access to hiking trails.

  • Lake Wenatchee State Park: Enjoy lakeside camping with breathtaking mountain views, plus options for swimming, kayaking, and fishing. A quiet escape just outside of town.

Where to Eat in Leavenworth: Refueling After the Adventure

After all the hiking and exploring, I was ready to dive into some of the best food Leavenworth had to offer. Here are a few places that quickly became favorites:

  • Rhein Haus: This Bavarian-inspired spot had some incredible desserts. I was blown away by their chocolate peanut butter banana cheesecake—the perfect balance of rich chocolate, creamy peanut butter, and banana. It was the perfect way to celebrate after a day on the trails.

  • Munchen Haus: Known for its cozy outdoor beer garden, Munchen Haus has an impressive selection of local craft beers that pair perfectly with their Bavarian-style pretzels. Whether you’re into lagers, IPAs, or wheat beers, there’s something for everyone here.

  • Bergdorf Cellars: For something unique, I stopped by Bergdorf Cellars and had their wine slushys-Not a bad way to cool off from the heat!

Final Tips from My Experience

  • Best Time to Visit: I was there during the summer, so it was a little warm, but definitely manageable. Waking up early to beat the heat for your hikes is highly recommended.

  • What to Pack: The mountain weather can be unpredictable, so be sure to pack layers such as hoodies, beanies, thermals, sturdy hiking boots, and plenty of water for your long hikes.

  • Permits: Some of the more popular hikes, like the Enchantments, require permits. If you plan on making the trip, be sure to plan ahead and secure your spot.

Bonus Entertainment: Unwind with Live Music

Leavenworth doesn’t just offer outdoor adventure and great food—it’s also home to some fantastic local entertainment. During my stay, I had the chance to catch a live performance by the band Flowers For Wolves, with Kelly & Meghan, and they were absolutely amazing. Their music was the perfect soundtrack for an evening in this charming town. Not only are they incredibly talented, but they’re also great people who bring an energetic and authentic vibe to their performance. If you’re looking for some entertainment after a day of hiking, I highly recommend checking them out if they’re playing in town!

Although Leavenworth wasn’t on my original itinerary, I’m so glad I made the detour. It offered a unique combination of adventure, relaxation, and German charm that I didn’t expect but absolutely loved. Whether you're looking to conquer alpine trails, camp beneath the stars, or enjoy a hearty meal after a long day, Leavenworth is the kind of place you don’t want to miss. If you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend adding it to your list!
